Singapore For Foodies – Uncovering The Hidden Gems

Singapore is a paradise for foodies — alight at any MRT station and you wouldn’t be able to throw a stone without hitting an eatery. Hiding amongst the myriad of eateries are the true gems; from uniquely local fares to international cuisine, these places offer yummy treats you won’t find anywhere else.

The hawker culture is well-known for good reason. Mindboggling variety of local cuisine is at every corner, and first up is Whampoa Prawn Noodle. Run by chio bu (pretty girl) 3rd generation hawker Li Ruifang, the noodles are served in flavourful broth that warms your body and soul. The dish is based from her grandfather’s recipe from the ‘50s!

The Whampoa stall is run by her aunts, and Li has her own store at the busy Tekka Market and Food Centre.

Next, we have A Noodle Story serving up Singapore-style ramen

Tucked in the middle of the ever-crowded Amoy Street Food Centre and stamped with the Michelin approval, 2 young “hawkerpreneurs” fuses Japanese cuisine elements with Singaporean influences to create this unique recipe that cannot be found anywhere else.

One of the founders, Gwern, began his culinary journey in Shangri-La during his teens. He was so inspired by the world of food and hospitality that during his stint, he left his higher education studies to pursue it.

International Flavours

Departing from the hawker culture, another hidden (literally) gem is the The Flying Squirrel. This hole-in-the-wall serves up delightful Japanese-inspired cuisine such as Truffled Ebi Fry and Wagyu Burger Pates.

Tucked away in an alley in Geylang is The Skewer Bar, where everything is on — you guessed it, skewers. The cuisine served stands out among the abundance of Chinese and Thai eateries in the vicinity.

Skewering everything from chicken to bacon-wrapped enoki mushrooms, the little bites make for an amazing supper.

What about desserts?

Local favourite ice cream café Creamier is nestled in one of Singapore’s oldest neighbourhoods Toa Payoh, well-hidden from the hustle and bustle of the city.

This quaint cafe is on the same level as any upscale joint, with interesting ice cream flavours such as Thai Milk Tea and Ginger Marsala.

Best-sellers include Earl Grey Lavender and Sea Salt Gula Melaka, and how can we forget their fluffy waffles?

You could also visit sister brand Sunday Folks, located conveniently near Holland Village MRT station. The Holland Village neighbourhood is also another great spot for good eats, and many expatriates choose to reside there due to the central location.
