Afternoon teas provide the perfect escape from the humid Singapore weather and a perfect reason to gather family and friends. The menu of sweets, scones, tea, and all things western, however, may not fit everybody’s palate.

How about a local afternoon spread instead? We mean it when we say local — even the wares used are carefully thought out to complement the delicacies!

Since its rejuvenation, Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore has been serving up countless plates of luxurious delicacies, and this time the focus is on The Lobby Lounge‘s 3-tier Afternoon Tea.

Take the Afternoon Off

A different kind of flavour is celebrated at The Lobby Lounge, and once the food arrives we promise that you’ll want to take as many photos as you can.

Spread over an elegant 3-tier tray, afternoon tea here is nothing short of a feast served to you on a silver platter.

The food is not merely Insta-worthy. Strip away the silver and you’ll find a showcase of the best sweets and savouries from the Peranakans — Straits-born Chinese who are known for their mouth-watering cuisines.

The savouries include Bo Lo Pau with Char Siew (barbecued pork buns), Kueh Pie Tee (crispy shells stuffed with slow-braised radish), and Lemper Udang (glutinous rice roll with spicy shrimp).

The other half of the tray is brimming with sweet delights such as Kueh Salat, Ondeh-Ondeh and more. For those looking for a more ‘hipster’ touch, the Gula Melaka (palm sugar) Macaron is perfect to sink your teeth into.

All the dishes in The Lobby Lounge’s Afternoon Tea set are delightfully local, and allows you to enjoy some of the best of Singaporean cuisine. But don’t think that that’s all you’d be getting!

Satay (skewered meat) beef, chicken, and mutton are also up for grabs (depending on availability), or perhaps you’d fancy a plate of White Carrot Cake instead? (it’s not really a cake!)

Or how about a warm dessert like Cheng Tng, Pulut Hitam (black glutinous rice) or Bubur Cha Cha?

Apart from the traditional Kopi (coffee) and Teh (tea), The Lobby Lounge also serves up uniquely Singaporean beverages such as Bandung (with candy floss!), Chin Chow (grass jelly drink), and Milo Over-The-Top, a sweet treat chock-full of malty goodness. A perfect close to your afternoon tea soirée!
